Asociación de Mujeres Meretrices de Argentina, a cooperative of sex workers throughout Argentina, have just launched their new advertising campaign on the street corners of Buenos Aires. Using stenciled graffiti in a Banksy style they aim to bring awareness to the fact that the overwhelming majority, 86%, of sex workers are single mums. They are single mums first and working parents second.
This is the same reality for many in Guatemala’s sex industry. When these mother’s are marginalized and their rights ignored, so are their children.
- Should sex workers not have the same child care rights as other working single mums?
- Should sex workers have no access to a safe working environment, a pension, health insurance?
- Should sex workers not pay tax?

MuJER is currently conducting a survey into the working life of hundreds of Guatemala’s sex workers which we hope to publish here online by the end of August.
